School and Community Tree Planting

We have just passed the halfway point of the Fall 2015 School and Community Trees Planting season — and all these trees planted are adding up!

Since October 8, we have planted 409 trees at 19 sites including Mundo Verde Public Charter School, Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy, Fort Mahan Park and more — and engaged over 23 different volunteer groups.

Arborist Becky Schwartz said, “This season has gone swimmingly. We’ve engaged new partners at the State Department and Mt. Olivet Cemetery, while deepening ties to TD Bank and Rock Creek Park.”

By the end of this season we plan to plant 501 trees! Planting locations coming up include Woodridge Friendship Public Charter School, Melvin Hazen West, Hearst Elementary School and Benning Park Recreation Center.

Volunteers are the stars of Casey Tree plantings. Without them we could never could have organized all the planting sites or gotten the more than 400 trees in the ground. According to our Volunteer Coordinator Erica Young, volunteers have donated more than 1,290 volunteers hours so far this season. This translates to $51,419 in donated labor hours according to the Independent Sector!
