A recent article released from NPR discusses the nationwide issue of canopy loss and how individuals can fight against it. While there are multiple factors that contribute to the decline of greenspace, the main causes seem to be development, disease, and old age. We all know that trees are living organisms and with that, it’s expected that old trees will eventually die and need to be removed. But, partnered with the other issues that contribute to canopy decline, the country is seeing a rapid loss of trees faster than organizations, agencies, and individuals can re-plant and add to the populations lost.

So, what does this mean for tree lovers everywhere? We ALL need to do more.

Here at Casey Trees, we work year-round to add trees to our nation’s capital – but alongside planting trees, we need to start at home if we want to win the fight against canopy decline. The article from NPR states, “2 out of 3 trees in urban areas in the United States come from natural regeneration, not from planting. And the reason we don’t have more natural regeneration occurring in cities is because we mow back that natural regeneration to create lawn landscapes.”

So, instead of having a monoculture lawn, opt for an eco-friendlier option! With monocultures, we draw all the nutrients out of the soil, and then need to add more with fertilizer — which can lead to pollution and increased runoff into our water systems. Alternatively, polyculture yards tend to be more efficient because different plants bring different characteristics to the environment. They work together to balance their ecosystem so that everything can grow with greater success, without the need of chemical fertilizers. Having a diverse yard will also allow for easier natural regeneration to occur – Free trees? Yes please!
