February 13 is a big day in our world – it’s our birthday! All month long, we’re looking back on our past twenty-one years and dreaming big about the future. It’s your first time volunteering at a Casey Trees planting – you don’t know what to expect. When you arrive, you’ll find trees placed throughout the park near a brightly colored flag. How did those trees get there? Why are they in those particular spots?
You signed up to get a free tree through our residential planting programs. How will you know where the best place to put a tree is? Which species will thrive in your space while meeting your desires for seasonal beauty? Something looks wrong with a tree in your yard?
It all comes down to our crew of Tree Planting folks. There’s Field Manager Nick and Urban Forestry Foremen Kent and Nate as well as Crew Chiefs Andrew, Francis, and Keith and Crew members Alex, Dean, Andy, Jerrick, Dondre, Marcus, Jamal, Julia, and Michael. Rounding out the planting and planning crew is Managing Arborist Allan, Horticulturist Maddie, Urban Foresters Evan, Jaxson, Jonathan, Amelia, and Liam. The data team Michaila, Matthew, and Robert are a big part as well as the leader of it all, Rob Shaut.
Whether in a large NPS park, smaller triangle park, District park or rec center, residence, or house of worship, these folks take care of everything from selecting the appropriate tree that will thrive in the optimal place, coordinating with project or property owners, driving around the city in a huge truck with a trailer full of trees, dropping the trees at their exact location (which isn’t always on a flat, easy to access field!), or actually putting the tree in the ground, our tree planting team is dedicated and thorough. We’re thankful for their relentless dedication to ensuring the success of each and every tree planting event – especially during the ever-changing COVID-related health and safety guidelines. Throughout it all, they’ve risen to the challenge.
We’re not the only ones either – folks big and small are in awe of our crew – and it’s easy to see why! A fun-loving bunch that works hard and plays hard, their hard work and dedication to their urban canopy is one of the many ways we’re able to do what we do.
Twenty-one years ago a completely separate tree yard, tree operations space, and entre tree crew of dedicated planters, planners, and data purveyors caring for over 31,000 trees was only a glimmer of a dream. While no one quite knows where we will be in the next twenty years it’s inspiring to know that we’ll have the trees and the team to make anything happen.
