THE LEAFLET
Reflecting on a Year of Community at Casey Trees
As we close out 2024, it’s time to reflect on an incredible year of growth, collaboration, and community impact. None of it would have been possible without the hard work, passion, and dedication of our extraordinary staff. This year, Casey Trees not only deepened its roots in the community but also reached new heights in our mission to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of the National Capital Region.
Our Tree Operations team achieved a historic milestone this year by planting our 60,000th tree, a momentous achievement that underscores their dedication and the lasting impact of their work. From vibrant community plantings at Huntwood Courts Apartments and Hamilton Manor Apartments to planting at homes across the region, our team has once again gone above and beyond to beat their own yearly records and ensure that DC’s tree canopy will continue to thrive for years to come.
Our Policy and Land Conservation team advanced critical conservation efforts at sites like Hellbender Hill and Allison Street, as well as our other conservation easements. These initiatives not only protect vital green spaces but also strengthen biodiversity and resilience across the region. Their work has expanded our ability to advocate for sustainable urban forestry and develop initiatives that enhance the green spaces across the region.
Our Education team had an outstanding year, creating programs that empowered volunteers and students alike. Our Treewise camps provided young learners with immersive experiences in tree care and environmental stewardship, while school tree plantings offered students hands-on opportunities to contribute to the greening of their communities. By inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards, the Education department played a vital role in expanding Casey Trees’ mission and impact. From Treewise camps to school tree plantings and supporting youth advocacy efforts, our staff proved that fostering the next generation of environmental stewards is a core part of our mission.
This year marked the return of the Urban Tree Summit as an in-person event, where our staff’s careful planning brought together urban forestry professionals and advocates for meaningful discussions and hands-on field sessions, like forest bathing at Brookside Gardens. It was thrilling to see the event come to life and witness the connections and collaborations it sparked. Our events team excelled through engaging activities and outreach, sharing the joy and importance of trees with people of all ages and backgrounds. Their efforts ensured that Casey Trees’ message reached and resonated with diverse communities across DC.
At Casey Tree Farm, our team worked tirelessly to tag and care for thousands of trees and undertook an exciting expansion. The farm added a new planting block that will accommodate 15,000 additional trees, bringing the inventory to over 40,000 trees. But it’s not just about numbers—it’s also about cultivating diverse species that enhance ecosystem health.
It’s impossible to capture every contribution or moment of brilliance from our staff this year, but know this: they are the roots, trunk, and canopy of Casey Trees. Their unwavering dedication fuels our mission and inspires our community.
As we look to 2025, we do so with deep gratitude and excitement, knowing that our team will continue to lead the way in making DC greener and healthier for all.
