Nestled along the Shenandoah River in Berryville, VA, Casey Tree Farm is where the journey of many of DC’s trees begins. What started in 2010 with just 3,000 trees has grown into a robust operation with over 40,000 trees in production today. Managed with a focus on sustainability, the farm uses techniques that protect soil health and ensure its trees contribute to greener, healthier urban landscapes for generations to come.

Kyle Derr, the farm’s nursery manager, reflects on the impact of their work, “Our vision is the production of sustainably grown, high-quality trees to help communities meet their tree canopy goals.”

This year, the farm undertook an exciting expansion, adding a new planting block that will accommodate 15,000 additional trees, bringing the inventory to over 40,000 trees. But it’s not just about numbers—it’s also about creating diverse species that enhance ecosystem health.

For Kyle, the mission goes beyond tree counts, “The best thing about working at Casey Tree Farm is really knowing that the trees we grow here are making a greater impact when they leave the farm. We take trees for granted in our rural environment, but when you go into an urban community, you see how much each tree serves a big purpose.”

These trees, sustainably grown in Berryville, VA, are destined for residential neighborhoods, schools, and community spaces throughout DC. Kyle says, “It’s great to know that our trees grown here at the farm are going to end up in the city and not only live for decades but hopefully centuries.”

Casey Tree Farm isn’t just about growing trees—it’s about growing a greener future for all.
