Planting trees is what most people know us for here at Casey Trees, and for good reason. We plant thousands each year on street sides, open spaces, and residential lots. Once established, they are relatively maintenance-free, but young trees in particular can benefit greatly from something that is often overlooked – and that is structural pruning.
Every tree has a specific form, like the rounded shape of a cherry tree or the pyramidal shape of most evergreens. Structural pruning helps maintain a tree’s natural form, while reducing the chances of broken and malformed limbs in later years. Last year Casey Trees structurally pruned over 3500 trees, ensuring they will remain strong and resilient for their long lives ahead.
It is for these reasons that we’re incredibly proud to have partnered with the City of Hyattsville’s tree team on structural pruning training. Led by our own Nick Smalley, Casey Trees’ Tree Operations staff conducted a half day class training followed by a full day and a half of field instruction to help Hyattsville keep their street and park trees in tip-top shape. This will save Hyattsville thousands of dollars in future maintenance costs, while creating connections to nearby residents to encourage more planting to benefit the entire Hyattsville community.
Structural pruning results in trees that live long, stay strong and provide decades of maintenance-free shade and beauty. If you think your young tree could benefit, sign up on our website to request a consultation. Hiring Casey Trees to prune your tree will not only extend its life, you’ll also be helping us to plant more trees through our many planting programs, including our residential planting program, RiverSmart Homes. And, if you think your community/town could benefit from a training session in structural pruning, contact us at friends@caseytrees.org and we’d be happy to discuss.
