Some may think about our urban trees primarily in terms of what they cost – yet, when we invest in stocks or funds, how many of us think of these assets only in terms of the fees, rather than their total portfolio value? When considering new road designs or municipal buildings, we weigh both the costs and the benefits. It is time we do the same for our community trees and forests.
Trees are one of the most valuable investments we can make in our schools and communities. They provide varied benefits and, as trees grow, their benefits multiply. And yet, trees rarely get credit for the benefits they provide because these benefits rarely show up in our tree budget. It is said that education is a critical investment, because a good education will yield tenfold down the road. It is the same with trees.
By planting the right tree in the right place and caring for young trees in the critical first few years of life, we ensure the long-term viability of these trees to survive and thrive. By working with neighbors, residents, and interested parties throughout the District, we ensure the investment of the community.
Every day, in all eight wards, we can see the impacts that we have made with people from the communities around them. Donate, share, volunteer, learn, or tell us where to plant next.
Big or small, how will you use what you have been given to serve something greater than yourself?
We’ll be here, planting, caring for, and marveling at trees.
