Later this month, Casey Trees will be taking a walk with our friend Dr. Chris Riley, of Bartlett Tree Experts, as we learn about and discuss the bugs that we may frequently see hanging out on our trees and in our gardens.
This walk, taking place on August 24, is part of our Meet Your Neighbors series, where we encourage local community members to experience the nature right outside their front door and meet others who love the outdoors!
Dr. Riley is an expert in entomology (the study of insects). During the walk, he will be using his knowledge to talk about invasive insects, their impact, and the importance of trees in supporting native and beneficial insect species.
“Although there are a lot of different insects out there, focusing on learning the biology and ecology of a few species at a time can really expand your knowledge of the insect world. From plant pests to pollinators to predators and parasitoids, we will explore some of the key species you might encounter on urban trees in your neighborhood and backyard. Special attention will be given to crape myrtle bark scale and spotted lanternfly, two newer invasive insects that are increasingly being found around the DC area.” Said Dr. Riley.
The walk will begin on the corner of Fort Totten Rd NE and Gallatin Rd NE. Join us for this easy paced, 45-minute stroll through this beautiful area and wind down after your workday. No prior insect or tree ID experience is necessary!
The official Casey Trees tree species guide will be available as an add-on when you reserve your ticket. Purchase of a guide is not a ticket to the event and is not necessary to participate.
Please register for the walk here, and if you want more events like this please consider donating to Casey Trees as we work to Restore, Enhance and Protect D.C.’s Tree Canopy! Casey Trees relies on the support of friends, neighbors, and volunteers like you to make our work possible.
