Show Your Mother Some Love This Earth Day

We are smack dab in the middle of Earth Month, Earth Day is exactly one week away, and Arbor Day is only ten days away. Phew! First celebrated in 1970 Earth Day is held annually on April 22 and has broadened to Earth Month (which also holds our beloved Arbor Day). Throughout the month, and day, folks show support for environmental protection and give back to our planet.

As you can imagine, there are a million and one activities, events, volunteer events, etc throughout D.C. that are earth, nature, and tree-focused, so we’re here to cut through the noise and highlight some of our faves:

Casey Trees’ Canopy Awards
Thursday, April 25 | 6pm-10pm | Dock5 at Union Market 1309 5th St NE
The Canopy Awards is Casey Trees’ flagship fundraising event that welcomes 500 guests to toast the accomplishments of those working to restore D.C.’s tree canopy. This year is about more than just raising funds for our programs. We want to shed light on how we are all interconnected. Roots to Rivers, the Sixth Annual Canopy Awards, is our chance to amplify and celebrate our collective efforts (while having a great time!).

Park Inventory: Arbor Day at Judiciary Park
Friday, April 26 | 1pm-3pm |Judiciary Park 401-449 5th St NW
Celebrate Arbor Day by inventorying trees and embodying the holiday’s implication of encouraging stewardship. You’ll help us document tree species, height, trunk diameter, crown width, overall health, and more.

Volunteer Community Tree Planting: Henson Ridge
Saturday, April 27 | 9am-12pm | Henson Ridge 1804 Alabama Ave SE
We’ll be continuing the Arbor Day weekend fun with our largest planting of the season! We need help planting over 100 trees throughout this neighborhood.

Arbor Day Festival
Saturday, April 27 | 10am-3pm | Oxon Run Park 1250 Valley Ave SE
We’re excited to be a part of D.C.’s first ever Arbor Day Festival: a celebration of trees and people at Oxon Run Park. This is an all ages event where you can enjoy trees through nature walks and bike rides, tree climbing (!), explore DC’s largest city park, and relax in the shade with live music and food. Local jazz and gogo band, JoGo Project, will perform at 12pm and food will be available for purchase from local food trucks. And of course, plenty of trees will be planted – join the Urban Forestry Division at the top of each hour to help plant a new tree.

Residential Planting Programs
Whenever | Wherever | We’re Meant to Be Together
Whether you want money back for a tree you planted yourself, or want us to professionally plant a tree in your yard for free, we have numerous ways for you to add greenery to your property.

And while it’s great to take a day to thank our Earth for keeping us alive and well, it’s also important to contribute to its wellbeing year-round. Consider getting involved with us at a volunteer event, learn something new at one of our classes, stand up for trees and an advocate, or pledge to make a difference all year. Our planet, its trees, and future generations thank you.
