SCA MLK Day of Service at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Our program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and community green spaces across the country. After working with the SCA, program participants emerge with increased environmental awareness, social responsibility and leadership skills.

WHAT: Volunteers from throughout the capital region area will remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by staging a massive clean-up at one of the most biodiverse natural areas in Washington, DC, at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. We are happy to return to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens where SCA volunteers planted trees with President Obama and other Cabinet Members in 2009. This service event will transform a crucial community greenspace while promoting the connections between social and environmental justice.

WHO: DC metro area volunteers, local youth, corporate partners plus SCA staff, SCA alumni, and NPS staff. Local figures participating in past events have also included White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi, Director of the US Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, Corporation for National and Community Service/AmeriCorps Chief Executive Officer Wendy Spencer and others.

BRING WITH YOU: Wear long pants and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring extra layers and a hat to prepare for the cold weather. Please also bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated.
