Volunteers planting a tree in Lincoln Park.

In the City of Trees—Washington, DC—planting trees is a way of honoring our past while investing in our future.

On the morning of April 4, more than 60 neighbors, volunteers, and supporters rolled up their sleeves to do just that: plant 36 trees in Lincoln Park as part of our “250 Years of America, 250 Trees for Its Capital” campaign. In partnership with National Capital Parks – East (NACE), part of the National Park Service, this initiative is helping restore DC’s historic green spaces by planting 250 trees in neighborhood parks in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

This planting marked the first 36 trees to be planted as part of the campaign.

Each tree tells a story. The species planted—including willow oaks, red maples, American elms, and more—were selected from the park’s historic planting maps so they fit right in with the park’s existing landscape. They’re also hardy, climate-resilient trees built to thrive in urban environments and make a long-term difference for our neighborhoods.

Lincoln Park has seen some of Washington’s most defining moments. It served as one of the largest military hospitals for wounded Union soldiers during the Civil War, and decades later became a gathering place for civil rights activism in the 1960sThe park’s statues honor national visionaries, including President Lincoln and African American educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune. These new trees join that legacy and keep it alive—offering shade, cleaner air, and beauty for everyone who visits.

What made the day so special was the sense of community. People of all ages came together to care for a park that belongs to everyone. It’s proof that small, collective actions today shape the future of our city. And we’re not stopping here. The Casey Trees crew will tend to each tree over the next two years, ensuring they get the water and attention they need to thrive.

Every tree in this campaign was sponsored by someone in the community. Some were planted in memory of loved ones, some in honor of family pets, and others dedicated to children, the next generation of canopy stewards. Each one represents a neighbor’s belief in our city and a commitment to the spaces that bring us together.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered, our Team Leaders, and to the supporters whose generosity made this possible, including event sponsor Latham & Watkins! Right now, we’re just $35,000 away from fully funding the campaign. That’s only 70 trees left to sponsor!

A gift of $500 sponsors one tree and includes a commemorative certificate, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come. Every gift, big or small, brings us closer to planting all 250 trees.
