This month, we teamed up with the City of Hyattsville for a hands-on community tree care at Driskell Park to empower residents with the knowledge and experience to plant and maintain trees. The event was part of an ongoing collaboration between Casey Trees and the City as they partner with residents to protect the community’s urban forest.

The morning kicked off with insights from two expert arborists—Casey Trees’ Director of Tree Operations, Rob Shaut, and Hyattsville City Arborist, Dawn Taft. Together, they introduced the “Right Tree, Right Place” concept, highlighting the importance of selecting the right species and how factors like soil quality, sunlight, and space constraints influence tree health. Attendees also learned about proper pruning and mulching techniques, including the 3-3-3 method (mulch 3 inches deep, in a 3 foot diameter ring around the tree, clearing mulch 3 inches away from the root flare), which helps protect tree roots, retain moisture, and suppress weeds.

Then, it was time to put this new knowledge into practice. Collectively, the group mulched 15 trees, pruned several others, and planted two sweetbay magnolia trees to replace trees damaged by deer.

By the end of the day, the group had not only strengthened their city’s tree canopy but also built a stronger sense of community engagement in urban forestry. It was a reminder that when people are equipped with the knowledge and tools, they can play a vital role in maintaining and expanding their green spaces.
