THE LEAFLET
Nourishing Our Community
At Casey Trees, we believe that healthy environments and healthy communities go hand in hand. Our work to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy in the Washington, DC area aligns with the efforts of many other organizations that share our commitment to creating a thriving, sustainable region. One such organization is the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), a vital partner in the fight against hunger and food insecurity.
The Capital Area Food Bank is the cornerstone of hunger relief in our region, providing more than 50 million meals annually to people across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. But their mission extends far beyond just food distribution. Like Casey Trees, CAFB employs a multifaceted approach to achieve its goals.
CAFB understands that tackling hunger requires addressing its root causes—education, job training, health care, and access to opportunities. By working with a network of partner organizations, they’re creating comprehensive, long-term solutions that not only fill plates today but also empower individuals and families for a better tomorrow. While they focus on alleviating hunger and its underlying causes, we focus on enhancing the urban forest to improve quality of life. Both missions intersect in their commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities.
Over the years, Casey Trees has partnered with CAFB to bring the benefits of trees to their facilities and the communities they serve. Trees not only beautify spaces but also provide shade, improve air quality, and create a more pleasant environment for everyone. Our partnership has resulted in the planting of over 100 trees at the Food Bank, and we’re excited to continue this collaboration in the years to come.
Recently, we held a tree care event with our friends over at CAFB, an essential activity during these hot summer months. Just as CAFB nourishes bodies, our work ensures that the trees planted on their grounds stay healthy and strong, providing shade and environmental benefits for years to come. Volunteers from both organizations joined forces to mulch, water, and care for the trees—crucial steps in ensuring their survival through the summer heat.
Tree care is more than just maintenance; it’s an investment in the future. By caring for these trees, we’re helping to create a greener, more sustainable environment that will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank and the community it serves. This partnership exemplifies how organizations can work together to address the needs of today while laying the groundwork for a healthier, more resilient tomorrow. Whether it’s through planting trees, distributing food, or providing educational resources, our combined efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of people across the region.
