THE LEAFLET
Checking in with the Farm
Since our last update, where we shared the news of our expansion, our farm team has been diligently working on several exciting projects over at the Casey Tree Farm. We’re thrilled to bring you the latest developments and give you a glimpse into what’s been keeping us busy!
One of our main focuses this season has been tagging a significant number of trees—7,974, to be exact—for reservation by our trusted partners. These include Casey Trees, Baltimore Tree Trust, Urban Forestry Division, the Architect of the Capitol, and both the City and County of Fairfax. Each tree reservation is a careful process, where our team considers the specific needs of our partners. We consider caliper size—some prefer larger trees while others opt for smaller ones—and the potential growth rate of each species between now and spring. This helps ensure that we’re delivering the best possible trees for each project. Additionally, we’re strategically managing our inventory by prioritizing the clearing of certain blocks and rows. This allows us to prepare the land for tilling, bagging, and planting again, keeping our operations sustainable and efficient.
Another major undertaking has been the continued development of our new Block 8. Our crew has been hard at work installing a trench and irrigation line, which will be critical for the health and growth of the trees in this area. This infrastructure is a vital step in ensuring that our newly planted trees have the best possible start. Speaking of new plantings, we’ve also been busy with the ongoing care of the trees planted this past spring. Our team has been pruning and tying these young trees, giving them the support they need to thrive.
As we look ahead to the coming months, we’re preparing for our fall planting season at the farm, which is set to take place in October and November. This is always an exciting time, and we’re already preparing by installing new bags in the nursery. These bags will help us efficiently manage the planting process and ensure that our trees are in the best condition to grow strong and healthy.
We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and the hard work our farm team has put in to make it all happen. As always, we remain committed to our mission of promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, and we’re grateful for your continued support. Stay tuned for more updates from Casey Tree Farm as we continue to grow and nurture our future urban forest!
