Women’s History Month

March marks Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. Women’s History Month has its roots in International Women’s Day, which was first observed in the early 20th century. The movement to recognize and celebrate women’s contributions gained momentum, and by the late 1970s, various countries started to officially honor women’s history for an entire month. In the United States, Women’s History Month became a nationally recognized month in 1987, expanding the celebration to encompass the diverse achievements of women across different fields.

At Casey Trees, however, the celebration of women’s accomplishments in the realm of environmental conservation and green advocacy extends far beyond the confines of a single month. From dedicated foresters to passionate community activists, we consistently shine a spotlight on the remarkable women who play pivotal roles in enhancing green spaces within their communities. As we commemorate Women’s History Month, let’s take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the inspiring women who we’ve spotlighted in the past.

We have showcased women in various roles, including foresters who play a crucial role in managing and preserving urban forests. These women bring expertise, passion, and a unique perspective to the field, contributing to the sustainable growth and health of trees in urban environments. Last year, we highlighted Casey Trees’ very own Forester, Gaby Elliott – as we discussed how she navigates working in a male-dominated industry. We’ve also had the pleasure of talking to Maddie Hoagland-Hanson, our resident horticulturist and landscape architect about the important work she does in creating pollinator and ecological gardens.

More recently, we spoke to Anne Hairston-Strang, newly appointed State Forester for Maryland (November 2023), and the first woman to hold the position. We asked her about her time and experience at the Maryland Forest Service (Department of Natural Resources) and about her current projects.

Beyond the professional urban forestry realm, Casey Trees celebrates the tireless efforts of women who are actively engaged in community activism. These individuals work collaboratively with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of green spaces and actively participate in initiatives aimed at fostering environmental sustainability. Last month, we spoke to Zandra Chestnut, an avid activist of Ward 7 working to improve her community for all who live there. And last year, we highlighted Angel Gregorio from The Spice Suite, who we worked with to add 20 beautiful trees to her business space.

Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of women across various fields. As we honor the past and present accomplishments of women, let us also look forward to a future where their influence continues to grow, ensuring the sustainability and vitality of our green spaces for generations to come.
