Our Champion Is…

Friends, tree enthusiasts, and nature aficionados – we’ve reached the grand finale of Phenology February, and what an incredible journey it has been! From the first bud to the final leaf, each round brought us thrilling matchups, fierce competition, and an abundance of love for our favorite trees. But in the end, we are proud to announce Scarlet Oak as the undisputed arboreal champion!

A special shoutout to our grand winner, the Scarlet Oak. Not only did it secure the Phenology February title, but it also holds the prestigious title of DC’s “state” tree. Talk about hometown pride! Scarlet Oak, known scientifically as Quercus coccinea, is a magnificent deciduous tree native to the eastern United States. Renowned for its vibrant autumnal display, featuring scarlet-red leaves, this species adds a splash of color to our urban and natural landscapes alike. Its impressive stature and ecological contributions make Scarlet Oak a true champion in every sense.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this arboreal adventure. Your votes, enthusiasm, and love for trees have made Phenology February an extraordinary celebration of nature. Interested in adding a Scarlet Oak to the landscape of your backyard? Our champion and all the other bracket competitors are available through our residential planting program, RiverSmart Homes. You can also get up to $100 back for planting many of these species yourself through our tree rebate program.

As we bid farewell to Phenology February, let’s continue to celebrate and cherish the remarkable trees that enhance our landscapes. Until next year, thank you for being a part of this incredible journey through the wonders of the arboreal world!
