Stay ‘Cool’ This Independence Day

With a city full of history and happenings, there’s no shortage of things to do and see when spending Independence Day in the District. Whether you’re a DC local, or if you’ve decided to spend the holiday in the nation’s capital, we’ve got you covered on some of the best shady spots to watch the fireworks or take a more relaxed, yet nature-based approach to enjoying the day.

Oxon Run Park

Another one of DC’s largest parks, Oxon Run stretches across 128 acres of the District, southeast of the river. With over 200 trees, the park is home to the largest number of Legacy Cherry Blossom Trees outside the Tidal Basin as well as being home to the very rare habitat of the Magnolia Bog. Oxon Run Park is a great Independence Day option for those looking to get outside and learn more about what our local environment has to offer. You will likely see some local fireworks

Bartholdi Park

Nestled between Independence and Washington Ave, Bartholdi Park is a gorgeous botanical garden that exhibits all the different plant types. Spend the day exploring the Conservatory and gated outdoor gardens, learning about species from around the world and how they uniquely thrive in their native environments. Within the Bartholdi Fountain and Gardens area, there are secluded benches to offer a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. Located right next to the Capitol, this site offers great views for those wanting to watch the fireworks while avoiding large crowds. Photos courtesy of US Botanical Garden.

Franklin Park

After being newly renovated in September 2021, Franklin Park offers a wide selection of seating and activities as well as the largest green space in downtown DC. The park is home to over 15 different tree species, including Willow Oaks and American Sycamores. See how many are familiar to you and what makes them unique! Located on 13th and I St NW, just northeast of the White House, the 4.79-acre urban park is a great place for those wanting to watch the fireworks in nature while still enjoying the district’s nightlife. Barnard Hill Park

For those chasing the view but running from crowds, Barnard Hill Park offers an area that’s beautifully shaded by a variety of oaks, including Pin Oaks, Scarlet Oaks, and Bur Oaks. Located on the northeast border of DC and Maryland, this park provides a more ‘low-key’ experience with an elevated perspective of the surrounding neighborhoods and any Independence Day activities happening in the area.

West Potomac Park

If you’re looking to be in the heart of Independence Day action, West Potomac Park is located directly south of the National Mall and west of Tidal Basin, offering great views for the fireworks show! Shaded by beautiful Elm and Cherry trees, this location is great for anyone trying to escape the heat and commotion of the Mall and retreat to a peaceful area nearby.

Fort Dupont Park

With over 400-acres, Fort Dupont is one of the largest and most popular parks in the District. Offering a large range of activities and ranger-led programs, this park is a great spot for anyone looking to spend their Independence Day enjoying the outdoors with hiking, biking, picnicking, and more! Fort Dupont Park also hosts a wide variety of tree species that create the canopy of the park, including American Sweetgum,  Persimmons, and Virginia Pines.
