Bringing Together the Best: One Month Til the Urban Tree Summit

The Urban Tree Summit we’re hosting with Montgomery Parks is officially one month away! Did you miss our agenda announcement last week? There are so many goodies to share and we can’t wait to gather online and in person in just a few weeks. Early Bird Pricing lasts until August 13 – grab your discounted ticket while you can!

With the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on climate change this morning, the importance and immediacy to adjust the way we think about cities and their resources have never been more apparent. Good thing the Urban Tree Summit has multiple sessions discussing just this. Check it out:

September 8 | Half-day Virtual Session on Zoom | 8:30 am – 12:30 pm | $25 | Register Now

Presentations on:

– Recent urban ecology research on ecosystem services of the urban forest from Concordia University’s own Carly Ziter

– The fascinating findings pointing to the fact that mushrooms and other decay fungi drive the living landscape from Plant Pathologist for the US FOrest Service Kevin Smith

September 9 |  Field Session 1 | Pope Farm, Montgomery Country, Maryland | 9:30-11:30 am and 12:30 – 2:30 pm | $50 | Register Now

Urban Wood Reuse is a cutting-edge (wink) field and we’re lucky to be surrounded by examples. Talk shop with urban foresters from the City of Baltimore, Washington, DC and Montgomery County Parks who are currently turning waste wood into valuable lumber and other wood products. There will be a live sawmill demonstration people!

September 16 | Field Session 2 | Arlington, Virginia | 9:30-11:30 am or 12:30 – 2:30 pm | $50 | Register Now

Our second field session covers urban forestry from top to bottom – from tree box to rooftop that is! Discuss the past, present, and future design of tree boxes with the Department of Parks and Recreation for Arlington Virginia before diving into a futuristic discussion on the final frontier of forestry: planting on rooftops.

September 23 | Field Session 3 | Langdon Park, Washington, DC | 9:30-11:30 am or 12:30 – 2:30 pm | $50 | Register Now

We’ll end with a bang in the District at Langdon Park, where we’ll join our partners in crime, the Urban Forestry Division of DDOT, to discuss their Pop-Up Arboretum. This walk and talk will also explore themes of community advocacy and partnership – crucial elements of our work within the Park.
