Students participate in TreeWise activities last summer.

TreeWise Summer Youth Program

TreeWise is Casey Trees’ nature- and place-based summer education program, developed to get youth ages six to 10 outdoors, interacting with and appreciating trees.

Youth participants engage in fun, hand-on activities and include scavenger hunts, leaf and bark rubbings, tree identification, water relays and more — and are all tailored to be age-appropriate.

Summer 2014 sessions run from June 23 to August 8. Groups may register for TreeWise format that best meets their needs and schedule.

Please note that all sessions:

  • take place outdoors rain or shine with the exception of times of severe weather or lightning
  • only occur on weekday mornings
  • require adult supervision and participation throughout

Choose a Session

There are three types of TreeWise sessions to choose from. Decide which one suits your organization’s needs and schedule.

On-Site Sessions

Groups that have or are in close proximity to a public green space, such as a park or playground, with mature trees may request a TreeWise counselor travel to them.

Each session lasts one hour and is limited to 20 students. Three adult chaperones must be present and provide assistance throughout.

There is no program cost if your site is located within 25 miles of our headquarters. All other groups must pay a program fee.

National Arboretum Field Trip

The U.S. National Arboretum — a true living museum and showcase of American horticulture — has graciously granted permission for Casey Trees to host TreeWise sessions on its tree-covered grounds. Each session lasts three hours and rotates participants through two different, engaging activities. Sessions accommodate groups of 15 to 30 youth participants and four adult chaperones must be present and provide assistance throughout.

There is no program cost but groups must coordinate their own transportation. A limited number of travel scholarships are available.

U.S. National Arboretum with the Washington Youth Garden Experience

The Washington Youth Garden, located on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum, sows the seeds of interest in horticulture and environmental issues. Each session runs for 3.5 hours and engages participants in two TreeWise-focused activities and one Washington Youth Garden coordinated activity. Each session accommodates groups of 15 to 30 youth and four adult chaperones must be present and provide assistance throughout.
