Japanese Pagoda

Styphnolobium japonicum

Contrary to its name, the Japanese pagoda is an ornamental shade tree native to China and Korea. It is able to withstand the rigors of urban life and still stage a late summer show of fragrant, white flowers and green leaves that persist well into autumn. Pagoda trees can be found on the Capitol grounds, Dupont Circle, and the National Cathedral. Casey Trees designated one Japanese Pagoda Tree in President’s Park the DC Champion – the largest of its kind in the District.

Size and Light Requirements

This tree does best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Once established, a newly planted pagoda tree can be expected to reach 40 feet in height in approximately 40 years.
