Gregg Serenbetz – Planting Through the Elements

What Inspired You to Become a Team Leader?

The giant-sized pastries, of course! But I stick around because of the friendships I’ve developed among the team leads and Casey Trees staff, the wonderful interactions with new and diverse volunteers each week and not least, the opportunity to plant trees that have an immediate impact to the community where they are planted, and eventually will grow and provide immeasurable benefits to the environment over their lifetimes.

Favorite Team Leader Memory?

Not fair! That’s like choosing your favorite child! If I had to name one, it would be the planting of the allée of Jefferson Elms along the road that leads to the CT Tree Farm. It must have been around 2010 or so. It was my first time at the farm, and the weather was perfect. It was great fun. We had a chartered bus taking us to Berryville. It’s awesome to see how much those trees have grown over the years.

Mary Thomas & Sam Myett – A Love Rooted in Trees

What Inspired You to Become Team Leaders?

We just thought the team lead hat looked really cool! Well, that and a deep and growing love of trees. Our increasing knowledge of trees has brought us so much joy in our lives and has become a passionate shared interest in our relationship. We even talked about trees in our wedding vows! Being able to pass that knowledge and passion on in some way is immensely satisfying.

Tree Planting Faqs

Still have questions about our planting program? Check out some of the most commonly asked questions about our tree planting services.

Does Casey Trees plant or maintain street trees?

Casey Trees does not maintain street trees (trees planted in the right-of-way street tree box). Though you may see a tag on a street tree indicating it was grown at our farm, and we plant some street trees for the city under contract, any street tree maintenance issues are the jurisdiction of the DDOT Urban Forestry Division. Call 311 or go to the 311 website to request street tree maintenance or to request a street tree planting.

Do you do tree removal?

We may do tree removal if the tree is small, in poor health, and is part of clearing out space for a new tree planting; but in most cases, we do not remove trees. For a list of certified arborists that serve your area, go to goodtreecare.com.

What is the survival rate of planted trees?

Tree survival rates vary by species and location, but trees that are properly cared for and become well established can live for decades or even hundreds of years.

Do you sell, give away, or have tree watering bags available?

We no longer install or sell tree watering bags due to plastic waste. Although slow-release watering bags can help efficiently water trees, trees can be watered sufficiently without the use of watering bags. For tree watering tips, visit caseytrees.org/water.

How long does it typically take for Casey Trees to contact me once I fill out the online consultation form?

After requesting a consultation, a Casey Trees staff member will contact you within 3 weeks, though we hope to get in touch sooner than that. To follow up on your planting you can contact the staff member you’ve been in contact with, or email friends@caseytrees.org.

Does Casey Trees plant tree seeds, seedlings or saplings?

While Casey Trees grows trees from seedlings/saplings at our tree farm, we plant young trees in the city that already have an established root system, have a sturdier trunk, and are ready for stresses of the urban environment. These trees are already approximately 1.5 inches in trunk diameter, or usually around 5 or 6 feet tall, at minimum.
