Last week, we were excited to team up with Howard University School of Law (HUSL) to care for young trees and pick up trash at Fort Stevens Recreation Center on their Day of Service. Our friends at Chesapeake Climate Action Network were also on site, leading a dedicated group in the important work of removing invasive vines from trees in the nearby forest patch.

HUSL brought incredible energy and enthusiasm – and they absolutely put in the work! Altogether, around 40 incoming students and their service day leads mulched and watered all 58 young trees, replaced deer guards, picked up bags full of trash, and removed countless invasive vines that would harm mature trees.

Restoring, enhancing, and protecting the tree canopy of Washington, DC goes far beyond planting trees! With summer temperatures getting more extreme every year, that fresh mulch will help these trees retain moisture and provide essential nutrients so they can continue to grow strong and healthy.

Events like these remind us that protecting our urban forest is truly a community effort.
