Casey Trees staff installing a garden

Trees and native plant gardens work hand in hand. Since 2021, our ecological garden program has helped homeowners transform their yards into beautiful, sustainable gardens that are good for them, pollinators, insects, and our environment.

Led by our horticulturist and landscape architect, Maddie Hoagland-Hanson, we work with homeowners to design and install sanctuaries of native and pollinator-friendly plants. From rain gardens to shade gardens, our fee-based services are focused on supporting wildlife, native plants, stormwater capture, and matrix-style plantings that require less maintenance, water, and fertilizer than conventional landscaping.

Tour Real-Life Examples of Our Gardens

This interactive storymap takes you through four of our garden projects that have grown over multiple seasons and support a unique set of pollinators and wildlife.

We are a small organization and can only take on a limited number of projects per planting season. To ensure we have a spot for you in our schedule, it’s a good idea to get in touch with us the season before you’d like your garden to be installed. Our staff reserves the right to evaluate submitted projects for ecological impact, canopy tree numbers, and alignment with our mission before committing to an on-site consult.

To see real examples of our different style gardens, look through the storymap linked above. Here’s just one example, which was one of our first ever installs.

Garden projects are typically paid for out of pocket in a cost-competitive, fee-for-service model. Any profit generated from our installations is plowed directly back into re-treeing DC and supporting our community programs. Investing in a sustainable yard contributes to a greener, healthier, and more vibrant city.

There are also resources available to homeowners who want to add native plants to their homes, including DOEE’s RiverSmart Homes program, Prince Georges County’s Rain Check program, and Montgomery County’s RainScapes program. For homeowners in Northern Virginia, the VCAP program may also be an option.
