It’s almost pool tree care season! While trees can require care year-round, they need extra love and attention right now to get through the warmer months. This month and next, there are many ways to get involved in your community and help ensure our city’s trees can survive and thrive for years to come.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY TREE CARES

Join Casey Trees for a fun day of service as we care for newly planted trees throughout the DC area. Together, we’ll mulch, water, and weed these vulnerable trees to help ensure they survive and thrive for years to come. We’ll provide all the necessary tools and supplies, as well as a brief training session.

Thursday, 5/15 – Climate Writing, Climate Action Panel at Politics and Prose on Connecticut Avenue

Join renowned authors Kate Woodworth, Mike Tidwell, and Jim Lardner for an inspiring evening as they discuss the intersection of climate change, activism, and fiction. This in-person event will take place at Politics and Prose Bookstore and celebrates the launch of Woodworth’s “Little Great Island,” a novel that explores how climate change is impacting a coastal New England town. Mike Tidwell is the Executive Director of CCAN and the author of “The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A Story of Climate and Hope on One American Street.”

Saturday, 5/17 – Anacostia River Festival

Set along the Anacostia River in the heart of Anacostia Park, festival-goers will experience the vibrant spirit and cultural depth of Black Washingtonians. Through live musical performances, a curated marketplace, and historical exhibitions, the festival aims to honor and uplift the many cultures that shape the Black experience in Washington, DC. All activities are free.

Saturday, 5/17 – Bloomingdale Community Day

Join your neighbors for a fun-filled day in the park featuring live music, food from local restaurants, children’s activities, a vendor market, a yard sale, and a dog show at Crispus Attucks.

Now through 5/30 – Wonders of DC Trees Exhibit at MLK Library

The exhibition of original artwork not only takes the tree as a starting point, but also repurposes arboreal remains like bark, twigs, driftwood, lumber, or tree pulp as the medium. Subjects vary widely. These canvases will spark awareness of the many roles trees play in building a greener and more climate-resilient city for future generations. Attention is given to street beautification, park greenspace, and the selection of different species to best complement the architectural scale and character of distinctive settings.

Saturday, 6/14 – Level Up: Ward 7 & 8 Resource Fair

DC Greens is hosting a resource fair at The Well at Oxon Run specifically for youth ages 15-21, offering opportunities to explore pathways to education, career growth, and wellness. Attendees will get to meet with exhibitors and explore careers in a number of vocations and trades as well as organizations that provide health and wellness support services. Casey Trees will be on-site promoting the benefits of trees, volunteer opportunities, and our free residential tree program.
