We were thrilled to join forces with WMATA this month to transform the pedestrian pathways at the West Hyattsville Metro Station with 40 beautiful new trees!
Despite the overcast skies, the energy was bright as Maryland State Senator Malcolm Augustine, Hyattsville City Councilmember Danny Schaible, 20 dedicated Metro employees, and 20 enthusiastic community members rolled up their sleeves to make our shared spaces greener, cleaner, and healthier.

As these trees mature into large shade trees, they’ll work hard to purify the air, provide relief from summer heat, and enhance the commute for hundreds of thousands of passengers each year. The varieties we planted include serviceberry, catalpa, American holly, tulip, loblolly pine, chokecherry, overcup oak, willow oak, and American Linden trees – each chosen to thrive in an urban setting while maximizing environmental benefits.
This planting continues our growing partnership with WMATA to bring trees to Metro stations that need them. We’re proud that around 200 trees now grace the grounds of Southern Avenue, Suitland, and West Hyattsville stations.

Thank you to everyone who grabbed a shovel and joined us, and to WMATA for recognizing that prioritizing passenger health and community wellbeing means prioritizing trees. Together, we’re creating a greener DC region, one tree at a time.
