Phenology February: Round 4

Welcome back to the enthralling world of Phenology February, where each leaf, branch, and vote contributes to an enchanting arboreal narrative. As we step into the emerald arena of Round 4, it’s time to rekindle the excitement of this unique odyssey and celebrate the thrilling matchups that have kept us rooted in our tree-loving enthusiasm.

For those just joining this leafy spectacle, Phenology February stands as Casey Trees’ groundbreaking tree competition, drawing inspiration from the fervor of March Madness and other legendary battles. This month-long celebration invites tree enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the wonders of nature. In the recent arboreal battles of Round 3, the competition ascended to new heights, delivering unexpected victories that resonated across our tree-loving landscape.

Southern Magnolia emerged as a majestic force, securing victory with a remarkable 61% of the votes against the formidable Dawn Redwood. The beauty of the Southern Magnolia evidently struck a chord with voters, positioning it as a frontrunner in this thrilling competition and the champion of the “Conifer and Evergreen” category.

American Sycamore, with its regal presence, effortlessly triumphed over River Birch, amassing an impressive 65% of votes to River Birch’s 35%. The resounding support for American Sycamore showcased its enduring popularity and the fervent loyalty of its admirers, making it the winner of the “Fall Foliage” category (admittedly also our “Winter Interest” category, given this and other trees’ interesting bark!).

In a nail-biting showdown, Redbud scraped out a triumphant victory over the Tulip Poplar with a slender margin of just three votes. The competition was fierce, with Redbud ultimately claiming the spotlight with a total of 51% of votes, claiming its spot as winner of the “Fruit and Flowering” category. This razor-thin race highlighted the intense fervor surrounding these two remarkable trees, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.

Scarlet Oak, with its fiery fall foliage, asserted dominance in a decisive victory over American Elm. The Scarlet Oak garnered an impressive 78% votes, overshadowing American Elm by a landslide. This commanding win underscored the Scarlet Oak’s undeniable appeal as DC’s “state” tree and crowns it the winner of the “Shade Giant” category. Updated Phenology February bracket for Round 4.
