At Casey Trees, our commitment to the environment and urban forestry is unwavering. It’s that time of year again when we rally our forces for a cause that goes beyond planting and extends into nurturing – the Casey Trees Fourth Annual Watering Challenge. This year, we embarked on a week-long journey that spanned across the DMV, and the results were nothing short of extraordinary.

To harness our resources efficiently, each member of our Tree Operations team devoted a single day to this monumental task. Trees watered outside of their designated days didn’t count towards the challenge – a strategic approach to maximize impact. We also accepted tree watering submissions from the community, allowing them to help us towards the count.

As the week unfolded, the momentum ramped up. By Thursday, Casey Trees crew members were not only watering across DC – but also at locations in Maryland and Virginia. Our education team’s very own Emma Joy and Sam Nelson also got in on the fun! Working their way across the Potomac, the duo watered a ton of trees at Bucknell Elementary School in Alexandria.

Saturday morning, we closed out our Watering Challenge with a Tree Care event at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center. The community joined us to care for trees by watering, pruning, and mulching; All much-needed steps to keeping young trees happy and healthy!

With every drop of water and every moment of effort, the Casey Trees Watering Challenge etched a legacy of commitment, adaptability, and unwavering love for the environment. Unfortunately, due to the week’s inclement weather and sporadic thunderstorms – The combined total impact of the week was an awe-inspiring 2,178 trees nurtured over the week. Although we didn’t hit our goal of 2,500 – the trees were still watered!

When we initially embarked on this challenge, it was because too often we see the result of underwatered trees throughout the District. Given the ongoing drought and unpredictable weather conditions brought on by climate change, we must appreciate any and all opportunities that keep our young trees hydrated. And if that means that mother nature takes the reigns during our watering week, then we just have to be grateful for the help!

As we wrap up this year’s Watering Challenge, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated, donated, and supported us in this journey. The impact of our efforts will be felt throughout the urban landscape, enriching our communities and nurturing a greener, more sustainable future.
