Welcome to the Casey Trees Team: Christina Hester

As seasons change and foliage grows, so does our team at Casey Trees! We are so excited to introduce our new Multimedia Communications Associate, Christina Hester. As well as taking on the Leaflet, Christina will also work to create digital content for our social media platforms, document events, and more!

Casey Trees (CT): Who is Christina Hester?
Christina Hester (CH): A Floridian tree-hugger, new to the city and loving it! I enjoy spending my time outside exploring my local green spaces, creating art, and listening to podcasts.

CT: What brought you to Casey Trees?
CH: I find fulfillment working in organizations where I’m able to be an active member of my community and the Casey Trees mission to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of DC really stuck with me as a large-scale local mission that I personally wanted to be a part of. As a new resident of DC, I feel like being part of Casey Trees will allow me to learn about and appreciate all the amazing things my new home has to offer, while also doing my part to make it an even better place for everyone here.

CT: How did you get interested in the environmental nonprofit field?
CH: Doing work that is important and meaningful to me is a top priority in my professional life. I’ve always been passionate about issues regarding the environment, but it wasn’t until semi-recently that I learned I could use my skills in writing to educate or be an advocate for the causes I care about. Once I started working with nonprofits and seeing how passionate people are towards their work, I knew that it was the path for me.

CT: What are you looking forward to doing at Casey Trees?
CH: I’m so excited to create engaging content that the Casey Trees audience will enjoy! In that scope of things, I’m probably most looking forward to sharing information and highlighting the wide variety of happenings and programs that our organization offers.

CT: We have to ask – What’s your favorite tree?
CH: It’s going to sound super basic, but I love a big oak. Growing up in South Florida, there wasn’t a great selection of big trees – and frankly, the big trees down there are saplings compared to some of the trees I’ve seen around DC – I think I climbed every single Virginia Live Oak I saw from ages 8-13. Currently, however, my apartment is surrounded by these huge American Lindens and I’m absolutely in love, the heart-shaped leaves just make me so happy.

Do you have a topic you have a tree-related, DC canopy, or community space-making topic you are interested in having us investigate? Know of any cool sites or trees we would check out and report back to our channels?
