Pride, Cemeteries, and Trees: An Iconic Combo

Tomorrow begins LGBTQ+ Pride Month and we are thrilled to be a Partner for DC Front Runners Pride Run 5K! DC Front Runners is a running, walking, and social club for LGBTQ people and friends in DC area. Not only is this their 10th Annual 5k it is hosted at the Historic Congressional Cemetery, a beloved community spot and home to almost 500 Casey Trees trees!

While cemeteries may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to adaptable green spaces and 5Ks, historically cemeteries have been places for communities to congregate and escape the heat and humidity of the city for the shade of trees.

Local community investment at Congressional Cemetery has allowed this space to flourish over time. We are honored to be a small part, hosting many Community Tree Plantings on site, planting almost 500 trees with the help of over 300 local volunteers, and working with diverse stakeholders to shepherd a long-term vision for the space.

This year’s race proceeds benefit local LGBTQ and disenfranchised youth organizations, including the Team DC Student-Athlete Scholarship, Wanda Alston Foundation, Casa Ruby, Teens Run DC, Blade Foundation, Ainsley’s Angels of America (National Capital Region) and SMYAL.

Join us Friday, June 10, at 7:00pm We are happy to be one of many awesome groups on-site and running (and probably doing some tree id while doing so)! Get your tickets here!
