Advocacy Win: Introducing the Fields at RFK Campus

In August of 2018, 27 acres of asphalt at RFK Stadium in Southeast began their long transformation into multipurpose playing fields. Events DC broke ground on the first parcel of a 190-acre site that was once home to several District sports teams but had been vacant since the end of 2017 when DC United moved into their new home at Audi Field. The revitalization of Lot 7 is part of an expansive vision plan for the entire RFK Campus site including a pavilion, foot hall, and sports and recreation complex.

We’ve had our eye on this project for a few years: in 2016 we submitted public comments in support of planting trees, preserving existing trees, and protecting trees during future construction.

Then at the end of 2018 Casey Trees’ Certified Tree Advocates submitted public comments at the end of 2018, thanking Events DC for the many new trees proposed for the fields project and requesting more details about soil space, planting conditions, and tree species. On June 8, 2019, the Fields at RFK Campus opened to the public, with over 400 new trees and extensive bioretention provided throughout the site. Thanks to all of those who submitted comments and advocated for trees in the District!
