Spending the Summer with TreeWise

TreeWise, our annual summer camp program, is in full swing. We shook things up a bit this year and are spending more time with fewer camps, so campers have more than one day’s exposure to the magic, wonder, and work of trees and the urban canopy in D.C. While we spent the first few days with campers at their respective recreation centers, the real fun happens when we take them on a field trip! Campers head to either Rock Creek Nature Center or Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. When we arrived at Kenilworth last week with a group from Rosedale Community Center, one of the campers excitedly exclaimed, “I can’t believe we’re still in D.C.!”

Our Junior Urban Foresters worked to get their official stamp by learning how trees are beneficial, how to best care for trees and what they need to survive, how they fit into ecosystems and habitats, and how to identify some common trees throughout the city.
