Tree Inventory Opportunities

This spring, in partnership with the Urban Forestry Administration we will be hosting nine tree inventory events and we’d love to have you join us in the field! Each one will be focused in and around parks and recreation centers to support our increased attention to boosting tree canopy in these very much beloved community amenities.

Friday, April 29                  Park Inventory: Meridian Hill
These trees have seen a lot. Come join Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration in a first of its kind collaboration, as we survey the trees in the famous Meridian Hill Park.

Wednesday, May 11         Park Inventory: Upper Senate
Join Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration as we collaborate to survey and take inventory of the trees in this historic location in the shadow of the Capitol Building.

Thursday, May 26            Park Inventory: Emery Recreation Center
Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration are teaming up to survey the trees at the Emery Recreation Center, and we would love to have your help! By taking inventory of these we can continue to plant the best trees in our community centers and beyond.

Saturday, June 4               Park Inventory: Yards Park
Help Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration in creating a record of the trees in the Yards Park in SE. This open urban space has been gaining much popularity in the past year with its modern installations, but what really makes it a special place is its growing tree canopy.

Tuesday, June 14             Park Inventory: Benning Stoddert Recreation Center
It might surprise you to know there is no current record of the trees in our parks.  But you can help change that!  Come join Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration in a first of its kind collaboration, as we survey the trees at the Benning Stoddert Recreation Center.

Saturday, June 25            Park Inventory: Hillcrest Recreation Center
You can help create a record of trees in D.C. parks!  Come join Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration in a collaborative effort to survey trees in community spaces, such as the Hillcrest Recreation Center.

Saturday, July 9                 Park Inventory: Landsburgh Park
Widely known for its impressive community garden, Landsburgh Park also boasts a sizeable tree canopy that we need your help adding to our inventory! Come join Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration in a first of its kind collaboration as we survey the trees in Landsburgh Park.

Thursday, July 14              Park Inventory: Chevy Chase Recreation Center
Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration are surveying trees in this community space to gain information on how to best increase tree canopy- and you are an essential part of this! Join us in our efforts at the Chevy Chase Recreation Center to create a record of trees in D.C. parks.

Saturday, August 6          Park Inventory: Lincoln Park
Casey Trees and DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration are joining forces to survey trees in the historic Lincoln Park and we would love for you to join us! As Capitol Hills largest park there is much work to be done to collect data on all the trees in the area.

All volunteers will receive a brief hands-on training and then work in teams to document tree species, height, trunk diameter, crown width, and other defining features. Data collected will be included in our GIS and used to better inform our understanding of the health and diversity of D.C.’s urban forest, and identify new planting opportunities.

No previous experience is necessary – just come prepared to learn and excited to play an important role in helping us re-tree D.C.  That said, check out our full calendar of events. There is still availability in our Tree Advocates Meeting and Structural Pruning Class.
