SUMMARY:Final Spring Tree Giveaway at Casey Trees
DESCRIPTION:DC residents: Register today to attend our tree giveaway! Trees are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\nWe’re giving away our final tree inventory\, a mix of species and sizes. Come see what’s in stock and take home a new tree—or two or three! \nPlanting a native tree in your yard is a simple but high-impact action that helps cool and clean our air\, improve our soil and water quality\, and support our natural ecosystem. \nWe will have around 40 serviceberry trees available in three-gallon containers. The remaining 50 trees are a mix of seven-gallon rootbag trees\, including hackberry\, hawthorne ‘Winter King’\, multi-stem river birch\, bur oak\, and black gum. \nRegistration is required but doesn’t guarantee you a tree. Trees are first-come\, first-served\, so get there early! \nTree sizes vary. Be prepared to transport a tree as tall as 8 feet. We recommend emptying your vehicle in advance. When you arrive\, there is gravel parking on our lot or you can park on the street nearby. \nVisit our How to Plant a Tree page for a video and instructions about planting your new tree. \nPick-up is from 4:30pm-7:30 PM at the Casey Trees office in Brookland! \nTag us (@caseytrees) to be featured on our social media with your new tree(s)! \n\n\n\nSupport Casey Trees \nDonate to Casey Trees to restore\, enhance\, and protect DC’s tree canopy! SUMMARY:An Evening with Casey Trees
DESCRIPTION:Casey Trees is the region’s leading nonprofit tree organization. Their staff is usually out in the field planting trees\, creating conservation easements\, or leading stewardship and education events. Join Capital Nature co-founder Stella Tarnay in this rare opportunity to hear directly from lead staff about their work\, as we take our tree series conversation from street trees to yards\, private lots\, and small parks: \n– Hear how Casey Trees\, civic groups—and residents like us—are helping restore DC’s tree canopy throughout the city and in our neighborhood. \n– Learn how best practices for watering and mulching can extend a tree’s life. \n– Tune in to tree volunteer opportunities. \n– Find out how to get a free tree. \n– See how homeowners are creating rain gardens and tree oases in their yards. \n– Ask a gnarly question about caring for your trees! \nThis is the second in a three-part series on trees and their care\, hosted by Capital Nature in partnership with Cleveland Park Library. Thank you to ANC3C for their support. \nThe event will include a table with tree resources and information. Two tree books will be given away as part of the program.

SUMMARY:Spring Tree Walk in Rock Creek Park with Melanie Choukas-Bradley
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a historic\, scenic tree walk through Rock Creek Park\, led by author and naturalist Melanie Choukas-Bradley. \nMore than twice the size of Central Park and the oldest urban national park in the U.S.\, Rock Creek Park is an 85% forested gem coursing through the heart of our city. \nJoin Casey Trees and nature book author Melanie Choukas-Bradley for a three-hour tree walk along scenic Rock Creek and through the upland woods of the Western Ridge Trail. \nMelanie will show you how to identify American hornbeam\, American elm\, river birch\, American sycamore\, boxelder\, black walnut and other stalwarts of the floodplain forest. She’ll then lead us into the upland woods where several species of oak\, including DC’s official tree\, the scarlet oak and a large spreading post oak\, mockernut and pignut hickories\, American beeches\, and sugar and red maples flourish. \nWhile gazing into the boughs of DC’s official tree we’ll listen for DC’s official bird\, the wood thrush\, recently returned from Central America. We’ll begin our tree walk near historic Peirce Mill\, an early 19th century gristmill\, and walk past an heirloom orchard and a fish ladder built to assist migrating herring. \nDuring our walk we’ll stand on Boulder Bridge\, built in 1902\, and gaze at the precise spot where President Theodore Roosevelt scaled a wall during his famous rock scrambles. \nThe walk should take approximately 3 hours and cover a little over 2 miles with moderate elevation change. In the case of light rain\, we will proceed as planned. However\, in the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms\, the rain date is Sunday\, May 3\, at the same time and place. \nMeeting Place: We’ll meet at Picnic Grove #1\, just south of Peirce Mill\, at 9:45 am to start the walk by 10 am. \nParking and Public Transportation: Limited parking is available at Picnic Grove #1. The Cleveland Park Metro station is a 15-20 minute walk away and the Van Ness-UDC Metro station is a 25-30 minute walk. \nWhat to Expect: While it will be an easy-paced walk\, please note that there will be uneven surfaces and perhaps muddy areas. \nWhat to Bring: We recommend clothes to protect you from the sun and closed-toed shoes that are comfortable for walking. Bring water\, snacks\, and wear sunscreen\, a hat\, and tick/mosquito protection. \nRestrooms: Restrooms are available at the start and close of the walk. \nCancellations: If you are no longer able to attend\, please let us know so others may attend. \nYouth Attendees: Youth attendees may participate with an adult present. However\, the content is designed for adults and may not be appropriate for youth. \nAnimals: Please no animals\, except for service animals. \nAbout Melanie Choukas-Bradley \nWalk leader and naturalist Melanie Choukas-Bradley is the author of A Year in Rock Creek Park and City of Trees\, which celebrates its 45th anniversary coinciding with the nation’s 250th. She has also authored several other regional nature books and books on forest bathing. Over the years Melanie has led tree tours on foot\, by bicycle\, kayak and canoe for Casey Trees. \nSupport Casey Trees \nDonate to Casey Trees to Restore\, Enhance and Protect D.C.’s Tree Canopy!
