Tree Bioblitz: Anacostia Watershed
September 24 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EDTFree
Help Casey Trees and the Anacostia Watershed Society document our local tree species at this year’s Bioblitz!
How many different tree species inhabit the Anacostia Watershed? Join Casey Trees as we explore and share our tree observations near Benning Stoddert and in Fort Chaplin Park. This is a great opportunity to work alongside arborists, citizen scientists and other volunteers as we build the data base that informs biodiversity scientists. All you need is a mobile device and an enthusiasm to look closely at the natural world around you.
Participants will receive a short, hands on training on site. After familiarizing themselves with iNaturalist, a simple app used to record observations, participants will break off to record as many species as possible.
Who Should Attend?
Have you wanted to get involved in citizen science, but haven’t made the time? This is your chance!
This event is open to the general public, you do not need any prior experience to join us. Although, if you’re familiar with local species or have participated in our Trees 101 or Trees 201 class, this will be a great way to put your knowledge into action!
You must bring a mobile device! (i.e. android phone, apple device, small tablet or iPad) and download the iNaturalist applications before arriving. We will plan to conduct the survey rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.
Participants are encouraged to take public transportation to the event. The Benning Rd Metro (Blue and Silver Line) is a 15 minute walk and a number of bus lines (96, 97, A31, E32, U5, U6, V1, V2, V4) are within a 5 minute walk. There is plenty of bike parking and a small parking lot in front of the Recreation Center.
Where to Meet
We will be located in front of the main doors of Benning Stoddert Recreation Center. Be on the lookout for the green/white Casey Trees table. Participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.
Light refreshments will be provided.
