Park Inventory: Franklin Square
October 3 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EDTFree
Inventory the historic Franklin Square with Casey Trees!
Want to put your tree skills to the test before winter sets in? Spend an evening with Casey Trees on the historic Franklin Square. Many of these trees have never been surveyed for their health, size or species and we need your help.
Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques participants will split into groups and begin measuring trees. We will be documenting tree species, height, diameter of the trunk, width of the crown, overall health and more.
Who Should Attend?
Open to the general public, you do not need any prior experience to join us. Although, if you’ve participated in our Trees 101 or Trees 201 class, this will be a great way to put your knowledge into action!
We will plan to conduct the inventory rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.
Public transportation is the best option for reaching Franklin Square easily and conveniently. The McPherson Square metro station is a 1-minute walk away. Local buses (3Y, 16E, 15Y, 42, 52, 54, 63, 80, A9, D6, DC98, G8, G9, S2, X2) all within 1 block of the park and the National Mall Circulator Loop bus will also provide easy access. The Circulators closest stops are on K Street and I Street NW.
Metered street parking is limited in the surrounding area.
Where to Meet
We will meet on the interior of the square, be on the lookout for the green/white Casey Trees table. Participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.
Light refreshments will be provided.
