Park Inventory: Fort Reno II
October 13, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC-4Free
Come inventory this Civil War defense with Casey Trees. After all your hard work in the name of science, enjoy a tour with historian and park ranger Phan of National Park Service! Arborist need our help, so come put your tree skills to the test at this battle site! We will be documenting tree species, height, trunk diameter, crown width, and health to inform the management of this green space.
Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques participants will split into groups and begin measuring trees from 9am-11am. After all your hard work (11am-1pm), historian and park ranger Phan will help us explore the complex history that extends far beyond the battlefield.
Who Should Attend?
Open to the general public, you do not need any prior experience to join us. If you have participated in our Trees 101 or Trees 201 class, this will be a great way to put your knowledge into action!
We will plan to conduct the inventory rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.
Fort Reno is just two blocks north from the Tenleytown – AU Metro station. Walk east from the exit then make a left on 40th St. Walk north then hang a right at Chesapeake St. Cross the street and take a left at the diagonal northeasterly path which will lead you directly to the Concert Stage.
Metrobus line M4 stops a half block east from this diagonal path.
For bikers, Fort Reno is bounded on the east by Nebraska Ave which is relatively friendly and cuts straight down from Rock Creek Park. Just turn west on Chesapeake St.
Where to Meet
We will meet near the Fort Reno Concert Stage. Be on the lookout for the green/white Casey Trees table. Participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.
Light refreshments will be provided.
