Park Inventory: C&O Canal
August 4, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC-4Free
Spend some time along the C&O Canal with Casey Trees!
Curious about the redevelopment to take place along this Georgetown canal? Help us inventory trees along this historic stretch of water so our advocacy volunteers can ensure all existing healthy trees are prioritized in the new designs.
Many of these trees have never been surveyed for their health, size or species and we need your help! Do you love science, data and trees? Interested in putting your tree skills to the test? Want to take in the fresh air with fellow nature enthusiasts? Join Casey Trees, tree advocates and volunteers at C&O Canal Lock 3.
Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques, participants will split into groups and begin assessing trees. We will document tree species, height, diameter of the trunk, width of the crown, overall health, and more.
Who Should Attend?
This tree inventory is open to the general public. You do not need any prior experience to join us. If you have participated in our Trees 101 or Trees 201 class, this will be a great way to turn your knowledge into action!
We will plan to conduct the inventory rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.
The closest metro station is Rosslyn and/or Dupont. The Metrobus lines D2, D5, D6, 30N/S, 31, 33, 38B, D5, stop in proximity to the canal. Bike parking & city bikes are widely available, metered street parking is also available but generally limited to two hours.
Where to Meet
We will be meeting at Lock 3 of the C&O Canal, which is in close proximity to Baked & Wired. Be on the lookout for the green/white Casey Trees table. Participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.
Light refreshments will be provided.
