[CANCELLED] Class: Inventory Team Leader Training
April 15, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDTFree
Do you want to play a greater role in increasing the District’s canopy cover? If so, consider becoming a Casey Trees Inventory Lead at our Citizen Science events! This is a two-part training which consists of an in-class on Wednesday, April 15th from 6:30-8pm and a field session on Saturday, April 18th from 9am-1pm.
Park Inventories are the cornerstone to planning, managing and maintaining the city’s urban green spaces. As a Park Inventory Team Lead, you will learn how to collect a variety of tree data including tree species, tree health and more to advance the field of urban forestry as we gain more knowledge about the trees in our area.
What is a Team Leader?
Our Team Leaders play a vital role in our park inventory program. Team Leaders lead teams of 3-5 volunteers at our events that happen throughout the spring, summer, and fall. You will be responsible for: (1) Safety of the team, (2) Executing proper techniques taught in the Team Leader Training, and of course, (3) Ensuring that your team is having a great time!
Process for Becoming a Team Leader:
1. Attend both of the two required trainings for your chosen path.
In-class portion of the training on Wednesday, April 15th from 6:30-8pm. In this portion of the class you will learn about the roles and responsibilities of all team leaders, how to keep your team happy, healthy, and engaged.
Field session portion of the training will be on Saturday, April 18th from 9am-1pm. This is the time that you will start to learn the mechanics of your role as a team leader and will be split into the program of your choice. Inventory Lead Trainees will learn the ins and out of all the tools and how to collect the data on the tablets.
2. Attend Two Inventories as a Team Leader Candidate.
After you take the class, volunteer at a minimum of two events in the same season as the workshop under the guidance of a mentor.
3. Lead a Team.
Lead your first team with a mentor following along to give you any last minute pointers. Finally, pass a peer evaluation from your mentor with flying colors you will graduate a full-fledged Team Leader!
Who Should Attend?
Open to the general public for anyone interested in supporting our nation’s capital by leading volunteers to successfully plant and manage our city’s trees! We encourage you to attend a planting or inventory in advance of the training to see if a leadership role is right for you.
After you are a certified Team Leader, we ask that you attend at least 1 planting per season.
All attendees will be provided with a light dinner on Wednesday evening. Please note your dietary preferences and/or allergies when registering so we can attempt to accommodate your needs. Saturday’s class will include a celebratory lunch.
