April 3 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDTFree
Do you want to play a greater role in increasing the District’s canopy cover? If so, consider becoming a Casey Trees Team Leader at either our community tree plantings or inventories!
Community Tree Plantings:
The foundation for a tree’s health and longevity is established the day it is planted. As a Tree Planting Team Lead, you will learn how to prepare a tree planting site and properly plant a tree to ensure its survival, as well as the techniques critical to maintaining tree health, including mulching and watering.
Park Inventories are the cornerstone to planning, managing and maintaining the cities urban green spaces. As a Park Inventory Team Lead, you will learn how to collect a variety of tree data including tree species, tree health and more to advance the field of urban forestry as we gain more knowledge about the trees in our area.
What is a Team Leader?
Our Team Leaders play a vital role in our community tree planting and inventory program. Team Leaders lead teams of 3-5 volunteers at our events that happen throughout the spring, summer, and fall. You will be responsible for: (1) Safety of the team, (2) Executing proper techniques taught in the Team Leader Training, and of course, (3) Ensuring that your team is having a great time!
Process for Becoming a Team Leader:
1. Attend the two required trainings on April 3rd (6:30pm-8:30pm) and April 6th (9:00am-1:00pm).
– Wednesday, April 3rd (Casey Tree’s Office: 3030 12th St. NE, Washington DC): Classroom portion reviewing the expectations and benefits of being a Team Leader, how to manage volunteers, and an introduction into urban forestry.
– Saturday, April 6th (Turkey Thicket Recreation Center: 1100 Michigan Ave. NE, Washington DC): Field session where we will put what we’ve learned in the classroom to practice.
2. Attend Three Events (planting or inventory) as a Team Leader Candidate.
