August Events are Here!

The heat is setting in and August is coming up quick, but before we get there – here are the events that Casey Trees is offering this next month!

Join us for some fun in the sun at our tree care events, Meet Your Neighbor walks, and catch us on 12th street for Open Streets at the end of the month.

AUGUST UPCOMING EVENTS

Saturday, 8/6Tree Care at Old Soldiers Home

Help Casey Trees care for young trees! Your help with weeding, mulching and watering these vulnerable trees will give them a leg up in becoming an important part of our growing tree canopy.

Wednesday 8/10Meet Your Neighbors: Virtual GIS Talk

Join Casey Trees for the first virtual edition of our Meet Your Neighbors tree walks, where we’ll cover the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how we use this technology in our Trees Near Me portal.

Learn how information about tree plantings and species diversity is stored and used to help us plan future tree plantings and track the progress Casey Trees makes every year.

Thursday 8/11 – Buds and Suds Tree Walk with Right Proper Brewing

Back by popular demand, we’re hosting another tree walk with Right Proper!

This will be a light, 45 minute walk to get acquainted with neighbors and appreciate the diversity of tree species close to home. Take a leisurely stroll with us around the block to learn about common DC trees, characteristics, and fun facts. We will end our walk at Right Proper Brewery where participants are invited to linger for a chat, a half-priced draft beer, or both!

Wednesday 8/24Meet Your Neighbors: Insect Walk and Talk with Bartlett Tree Experts

This walk is part of our Meet Your Neighbors series, where we encourage local community members to experience the nature right outside their front door and meet others who love the outdoors!

For our August neighborhood walk, we’ll be joined by guest speaker Chris Riley of Bartlett Tree Experts, an expert in entomology (the study of insects), to talk about invasive insects, their impact, and the importance of trees in supporting native and beneficial insect species

Saturday 8/27Tree Care at Temple of Praise

You provide the volunteers, we provide all the necessary tools and supplies to care for trees. Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques, participants will split up into groups and begin caring for trees throughout the park.

Saturday 8/27Open Streets DC 12th Street NE

Open Streets in Your Neighborhood is coming to Ward 5’s 12th Street NE at the end of August! The event will close half a mile of 12th Street NE to cars and open them up to people to ride, bike, walk, socialize, and participate in fun programming, just in time for school!

Hope to see you there!
