2k Watering Day
It’s that time of year again – Casey Trees Third Annual Big Watering Day! In 2020, we set out with a goal to water 1000 trees. In 2021, we set our sights to a lofty 1500. And this year our crew is attempting our biggest yet 2k!
Yes, that is right this Wednesday, we’re raising our goal by another 500 trees to water 2,000 trees and raise $2,000.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, young trees that have been in the ground for less than three years, require 25 gallons of water (about 1.5 inches of rainfall) weekly to survive. With our summers getting hotter and hotter, it’s important to make sure your trees receive enough water to ensure they grow into large, beautiful trees that will shade us for years to come.
While we are predicted to have some summer storms this week, our baby trees (newly planted trees) need a slow trickle of water. As Nick Smalley, Field Manager put it, “If the storms hit we get a weeks’ worth of water in 30 minutes and a lot of it runs off. Can’t trust these thunderstorms” … BUT in our urban forestry crew we trust!
We are excited to check back in with Nick who is mobilizing the whole crew Wednesday for our biggest watering day yet! Keep your eyes on our Instagram for updates throughout the day.
Small grassroots campaigns like this keep us doing what we love — planting, watering, and caring for trees. We ask you to give what you can, whether that’s $20, $200, or $2000! All donations go back to Casey Trees’ efforts to plant, water, and advocate for D.C.’s tree canopy.
We’re so grateful to be able to play our part in taking care of our urban tree canopy, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the help of people like you! People who love the District, its trees, and want to restore, enhance, and protect our environment for generations to come.
Be sure to follow along @caseytrees on Wednesday for the play by plays and interviews with the crews.
