Business Districts

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), Main Street programs, and neighborhood business associations are strong allies in the promotion and care of trees in Washington, DC. These groups aim to make areas cleaner, safer and more vibrant for businesses and residents, and healthy trees play a vital role.

Casey Trees has teamed up with BIDs and others to offer trainings, provide technical assistance and promote sound design. To learn more about the benefits of trees, see our Greening Business Districts issue brief.

Field Training for Non-Tree Professionals

We’ve developed a hands-on field training for maintenance workers and ambassadors, covering tree basics, watering, tree care, and dos and don’ts. For information or to schedule a training, contact Sue Erhardt, Director of Education, serhardt@caseytrees.org.

Downtown Tree Partnership

In 2006, the Downtown DC BID, Casey Trees and the District’s Urban Forestry Administration launched a formal partnership to increase the number, health and longevity of trees in the 138-block downtown commercial core. Initiatives include:

  • Tree trainings for property managers and BID maintenance staff
  • Annual surveys of downtown trees
  • Coordinated efforts to fill empty tree boxes
  • Engagement of property managers in watering young street trees
  • Inventory and removal of tree grates endangering trees
