More than 240 adult volunteers have already helped us plant 150 trees across the District through our Community Tree Planting program — and we still have eight more planting sites across D.C. to go! The season will wrap up on May 16 with the Arbor View Community Tree Planting in Southeast D.C., which still has open volunteer slots!

“So far this season, our volunteers have patiently waited for the ground to thaw after a late cold snap, learned to plant trees in the pouring rain and braved roaring winds,” said Katie Blackman, Casey Trees Volunteer Coordinator. “But you can always pick out a Casey Trees volunteer from the crowd because they are the ones that still have a smile on their muddy, wind-burned faces! Four plantings down, eight to go; plenty of time for old Mother Nature to cut us a break.”

We’ve also been busy planting at school campuses through our School Community Tree Planting program. Campuses where we’ve planted include:

• Janney Elementary School — Third grade students and their parents and teachers helped to add six trees to their school’s playground and garden.
• School Without Walls at Francis Stevens — Fourth graders and their teachers and parent volunteers planted 10 trees including eight fruit trees to start their forest orchard/garden.
• SEED Public Charter School — Middle and high school students added 13 new trees to their campus including 10 fruit trees by their building entrance.
