Introducing Our New TreeWise Counselor

TreeWise is back for its sixth year and we are happy to report some awesome additions to our summer youth program! New this year, we are offering hosting a limited number of sessions at Rock Creek Park Nature Center and The Kreeger Museum.

We are also happy to introduce you to our newest TreeWise counselor Gussie Maguire! Check out what Gussie is excited for this summer:

Casey Trees (CT): Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you like to do?
Gussie Maguire (GM): I hail from Baltimore, MD (the actual city, not the county). My favorite thing to do is play rugby! I also like to cook, camp, hike, and do sudoku and crossword puzzles.

CT: What brought you to Casey Trees?
GM: I was looking for a job doing something environmental in the D.C. area, and I happened upon Casey Trees in one of my searches. I had spent part of the last year doing some environmental education, and I’ve always loved working at camps, so the job posting was pretty much screaming my name. I applied right away and I’m so glad I got the position!

CT: What personal touch will you bring to TreeWise?
GM: I read in notes on TreeWise from past years that kids have been really interested in the bugs around them during the tree lessons, so I’m working on integrating “creepy crawlies” into the lesson plans. I especially want to teach kids about honeybees and how important they are to trees and to people.

CT: We are really excited about being able to offer TreeWise at Rock Creek Park Nature Center and The Kreeger Museum. — what are you most excited about?
GM: I’m excited to work at both those locations, but I’m definitely most excited just to be working with kids outdoors, especially the ones who don’t spend a whole lot of time in nature. It’s really fun to see them get excited about the natural world around them.

CT: If you could plant a tree with anyone dead or alive who would you plant with?
GM: I would plant a fruit tree with Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, so then we could make some awesome food with the fruit!
