THE LEAFLET

Grades are in

In just a few short weeks, school will wrap up for the summer and report cards will go out. For some, they can’t wait to see their hard work rewarded with As. But for others, there will be some trepidation and they will note areas for improvement.

Casey Trees’ Tree Report Card is no different. For the seventh time, we are issuing our findings on the overall health and condition of the District’s trees. Some will agree with the result and our recommendations, and others will see things differently.

That’s largely the point. While the Tree Report Card reports on our collective progress to pushing the District to 40 percent canopy cover, its true value is in prompting conversation and raising awareness.

The best ideas and strongest partnerships are forged from open dialogue and that is what we want to result from the seventh edition.

In honor of Earth Month, I hope you will take a few minutes to review why D.C. for the third year in a row receive an overall B- grade — and what steps if taken would significantly improve the grade and do better by our trees.
