Charrette-tastic

“Charrette” is more than just a fun word to say.

A charrette is a design-based, collaborative exercise that engages citizens, designers, and other stakeholders in a drawing exercise, often resulting in a vision or framework for moving forward.  Charrettes can be an engagement tool for community planning events, but they are also helpful learning instruments.  At its core, a charrette provides a forum for ideas and offers the unique advantage to provide immediate feedback for a project or concept.

That is why on April 30, Casey Trees’ Design and Advocacy team will hold their third design charrette on the Green Area Ratio (GAR), following a Training Seminar hosted by the District Department of the Environment’s (DDOE). The training seminar will introduce attendees to the GAR, D.C.’s new environmental zoning regulation that sets landscape standards in new developments. The following design charrette will give participants the opportunity to apply their new knowledge by designing a sample site in D.C. that would meet GAR requirements.

Casey Trees will provide all the necessary items including large format site plans, trace paper, scaled rulers and colored pens and markers — attendees just have to bring their creativity and problem-solving skills!

If you’d like to learn more about the GAR and participate in a design charrette — possibly even for the very first time, this is a great time to do it.
