Summer Crew Kicks Off in 2012

We’re launching the latest season of High School Summer Crew! This is the 11th year of our program where 10 local students age 16 and older work for eight weeks over the summer.  These crew members were selected from many highly qualified students who applied, interviewed and attended our Field Try Out. We were fortunate to have over 100 applicants for the positions and we are really excited about this year’s group.

The summer crew students will be watering, weeding and adding mulch to the trees Casey Trees has planted. Newly planted trees in the stressed urban environment need extra care to become established. These trees need 1.5 inches of rain per week (25 gallons of water) to develop healthy root systems. The crew delivers the water with buckets, hoses, a special adapter that attaches to city fire hydrants, and a large water bladder carried on our truck’s trailer. It is tough work, but it’s a great learning experience and our trees need it.

Six of the summer crew students will deploy to maintenance sites using our trucks with watering and tool trailers, while four of the students will make up the Water By-Cycle team. Both teams will be braving the summer heat and traveling throughout the city to bring water and care to the trees we’ve planted throughout the city. Our urban forestry staff will lead the students and teach them valuable skills that will prepare them for green careers.
