School Planting Recap: Murch Elementary, Bancroft Elementary, Paul PCS
Some of our recent school plantings have been absolutely nutty with fruit trees! Three schools this week added fruit orchards to their campus, Murch Elementary in Ward 3, Bancroft Elementary in Ward 1 and Paul Public Charter School in Ward 4.
Casey Trees’ tree planting crew were at Murch Tuesday morning to add 13 fruit trees, including pawpaws, dwarf apples, persimmons and figs, along the fence near their soccer field and 2 pear trees near their garden plots. Nearly 50 third-grade students helped with the planting, as did Citizen Forester Ulrich Hewer and four other adult volunteers from the school. Thanks to Project Organizer Lisa Burke, a parent at the school, for helping to make this planting a success!
Later that day the crew was working with 29 third-graders from Bancroft. The groups planted 6 fig trees, 4 persimmons, 3 pawpaws and 4 serviceberries in various locations around the school, including some along the street and some near their garden beds. Devon Bartlett, Bancroft’s garden coordinator, was the Project Organizer for the event.
On Wednesday Casey Trees was planting at Paul PCS with 22 Green School students, sixth- through ninth-graders. Most of the 23 trees were planted in front of their school, creating an orchard of apple, peach, pear and plum trees. Additionally, 5 fig trees went in around the corner near the school’s garden plots. James McDowell, the facilities manager at Paul, was our Project Organizer and even got out there with the pick axe when some of the students started to flag under the afternoon sun.
