Why apply for High School Summer Crew?

“How is it possible that we have accomplished so much in so little time?” – Claire Adler, Summer Crew alum

While Claire’s sense of accomplishment alone may not be enough to motivate you (or your 16-year-old, as the case may be) to apply for High School Summer Crew, what about any of these other awesome perks?

  • Cold, hard cash: Crew members earn $9 an hour, working 35 hours a week for 8 weeks from June to August. You do the math.
  • New friends: The crew is a small group that has to work as a team to care for all these trees. Many former crew members tell us they keep in touch with their old coworkers, and sometimes they even come back and visit us. (We’re good for future references, too!)
  • Help the trees: Didn’t think we’d leave this one off, did you? Really, if it’s as hot a summer as it was mild a winter, your attention could mean the difference between life and death for some of our trees.
  • Get a workout: Summer Crew is hot, sweaty work, but think of how great you’ll look and feel at the end of the summer with your muscles toned from carrying buckets of water and biking all over the city.

If you are a high school student or recent graduate in the D.C.-metro area, 16 or older, able to lift 40 lb. and willing and able to work outside in all types of weather, then we’ve got the job for you! Interviews will take place on a rolling basis, and finalists will participate in all-day field tryouts on prior to being accepted.

Selected students are trained in proper tree care, then travel in teams by bicycle or truck to former Casey Trees planting sites across D.C. to water, weed and mulch trees that have been in the ground for less than two years.

Last year Summer Crew had a banner year, but we’ve got a good feeling that this year is going to surpass even that. Get those applications in!
