CTP Recap: Kingsbury, Maury, & Wangari Memorial

Our first few Community Tree Plantings of the fall season have been characterized by some fresh faces, but familiar spaces. It was our second time visiting both the Kingsbury Day School and the Maury Elementary School (on September 27th and on October 4th, respectively). Needless to say, our Crew Member Josh Singer was no stranger at the Wangari Memorial tree planting (September 29th) either. The school plantings were utilized to help the students create some space for science and horticultural learning, as well as landscape school property to create a more interactive space for the students.

Two fig, two yoshino cherry trees, and one sweetgum were planted at the Kingsbury site, with help from the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Anne Hedman, our Citizen Forester Xaiver Brown, and 17 children and volunteers. Four eastern red cedar and one honeylocust were planted at Maury Elementary, with help from Vanessa Ford, Anya Zmudzka, and approximately twenty 3rd and 4th graders! The Wangari planting was held in collaboration with the Kenyan Embassy and was a tribute to the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, Africa’s first female Nobel Peace Prize winner.

We appreciate everyone who came out for our first fall plantings! Check out more photos from the Kingsbury and Maury plantings on our Flickr page.
